Accident seems to be one of the worst enemies of man’s freedom and dignity. Nevertheless, I would like to put in a good word here for accident, and for its results. Am I then speaking against man’s freedom and dignity? By no means. It is just that I think it would be a sign of deficiency of freedom if man were to live undignifiedly beyond his means: beyond the means, that is, of his finite nature. If he chooses not to do this, he has to acknowledge the results of accident, by a defense of the accidental.
